Eliminate School Drop out - Encourage Learning

The Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Charles County (BGCSTC) continues to reach out to its membes with a strong desire and goal for each to realize Academic Success by remaining in school and completing their education.

As the world becomes even more interconnected, it has become more critical than ever for our young people to develop the skills needed to compete in the global economy.  Schools are a vital part of the eudcation process.  Parents and family membes are also integral to children's success.  BGCSTC is an important third party componet in academic success for its members.  BGCSTC serves as a partner in providing access to the programs and resources that both youth and families need to succeed.  BGCSTC is uniquely postioned to make a significant difference in the academic success of youth in the community.  BGCSTC comfortably blends the lines between school and home by providing homework assistance and preparing the children for school the next day.  When young people attend school with homework completed, they enjoy and participate in the classroom while feeling a sense of accomplishment.  When this learning process takes place, youth are more likely to finish school and proceed to a post-secondary education or reach out for additional job training while looking forward to a rewarding future.

During February 2018, the BGCSTC After School Power Hour Program provided 812 educational support hours to 140 members.  As previously stated, these hours offered a structured time and place for BGCSTC staff and volunteers to help members complete their homework and start each school day better prepared and with a sense of confidence and competence.

Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Charles County STEAMbotics Academy has the interest of many children who have a strong and inquisitive desire to explore their future through STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art. Math)  It is well understood in the next few years, 80% and more employment positions will be related to STEAM. We must prepare our children for a gainful future and being involved in the Boys & Girls Club programs is where a GREAT Future will begin.

STEAM programs help drive academic success for youth in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math fields, while uniquely positioning them to make a difference in the future workforce.  Each lesson aims to promote engagement in one or more of the specific fields.  In the program, participants complete hands-on experiments and activities in multi-stage projects alongside staff and mentors, covering topics across multiple learning fields.

Since over 60% of the Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Charles County members are "at risk" and live in or below the national poverty level, the Club has seized the opportunity to provide the children with knowledge and the necessary equipment to physically build robots and experiment with computer coding and all facets of the STEAM program. The children are taught to do research as well as make presentations.  The newly formed classes have competed in local Robotics competition giving the children the opportunity to be exposed to some very unique opportunities and desire to set and reach higher goals.

Although our local schools provide STEAM related classes there is not enough time available during the school day to provide the individual attention that is often required to complete a project.  Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Charles County members are involved in a task from beginning to end.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Charles County STEAMbotics Academy is in its infancy but has a bright future enabling more children to look for a rewarding future and be welcomed into the workforce.  The Clubs fully understands the importance of reaching out to the children in the community and this very important opportunity.

Eliminate School Drop out - Encourage Learning

Homework can be done along or with help.
Homework can be done along or with help.

A goal of the Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Charles County has not changed over the years.  The Club desires that all members will realize academic success, remain in school, complete their education and become a gainfully employeed adult.  Twenty-eight percent of the Club's members come from a single parent household and it is harder for the parent or guardian to sometimes provide adequate time to assist with homework.  The Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Charles County provides a number of educational classes that operate daily during the After School Program. Members are provided homework assistance by the Club's professional staff or qualified volunteers to assure the student that he or she will be ready to participate in the classroom the next day.  We all know that if a child is unprepared for the classroom activities they will not become engaged in the learning process.  An unprepared student will sometimes become disruptive causing distraction for the other students as well as the instructors.

A student prepared for their day at school will perform better, grow in knowledge, become eager to learn and have more self-esteem. A child doing well in the classroom does not consider dropping out of school, they look forward to a bright future.
