What You Give When You Give: Meet Mogan and Megan

Meet the Twins
Mogan and Megan are 11-year-old twins. As toddlers, their single mother developed debilitating mental health problems, so Mogan and Megan fell into the care of a grandmother who lacked the means to support them. Thanks to the generosity of donors like you, we were able to welcome Mogan and Megan to our school as kindergartners, before they had a chance to fall behind. Today, they are vibrant fourth graders who love science and soccer. Thank you for all you do to help us ensure children like Mogan and Megan are not left behind by circumstances beyond their control.

Boost Your Impact
On JUNE 15th, GlobalGiving will host a bonus day, when they will provide a 40% match on all donations made to the Margaret Okari Children’s Foundation through the GlobalGiving website. We work hard to provide our kids with a nurturing home and one of the best academic programs available in our region -- and we do it all at a cost of less than $1 per child per day. June 15th is a great opportunity to help your dollars go further in support of kids like Mogan and Megan. We’ll send a reminder as the date approaches, but please mark your calendars now!

On behalf of all of our kids, thank you again for your support!

Welcome to the Mushroom House: Funding Education with Fungi!

Kids relax in the shade of our new mushroom house

As the 2016 school year gets under way, we are excited to announce the construction of a new mushroom house on campus! We will be growing and selling mushrooms to a local buyer who will dry them and export them to international markets. Cultivating mushrooms for sale is one of several activities we are undertaking to move our organization toward greater financial independence and sustainability. Engaging our kids in the growing process will also teach them income-generating skills they can apply in the future.

As we seek to expand local revenue-generating activities in the years ahead, we remain deeply grateful to our wonderful network of donors! Your support is critical as we work to provide the orphans and vulnerable children of Kisii, Kenya with a quality education, a nurturing home, and a chance at a bright future. Please consider sponsoring one of our orphans today by making a one-time donation or signing up to contribute $25/month. For the cost of a daily trip to the vending machine, you can change a child’s life!

An African proverb says “If you want to go quickly, go alone; if you want to go far, bring everyone.” Thank you for being a critical partner as we work to empower marginalized children with the tools to become self-sufficient, contributing members of their communities.

With gratitude,
The Margaret Okari Children's Foundation Team

What you did in 2015!

What you give when you give: Meet 3-year-old Stacy, the newest addition to our school

When Stacy’s mother died, she fell into the care of a young, undereducated, overworked aunt. The aunt, struggling to support herself and unprepared to take on the role of motherhood, had little choice but to leave Stacy alone with her alcoholic boyfriend when she went to work at a local bar. The arrangement led their neighbors to approach us and ask us to intervene on Stacy’s behalf. We met with Stacy's aunt and, thanks to your support, are now providing Stacy with a safe, nurturing home and access to one of the best academic programs available in our region.

This Thanksgiving season, we are thankful for YOU, our donors. It is your generosity and compassion that allow us to open doors of opportunity to Stacy and more than 200 other orphans and vulnerable children like her.

Please consider including Stacy and the rest of our kids in your end-of-year giving, beginning tomorrow with Giving Tuesday, a day of charitable giving on the heels of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. As our project page indicates, it takes less than $1 a day to provide Stacy and each of our other children with a quality education, a nurturing home, food, and medical care. Your contributions -- of any size -- truly make a difference in the lives and futures of our kids. Thank you for making that difference!

With gratitude and best wishes for a joyful holiday season,

The Margaret Okari Children's Foundation Team
