I never had an opportunity to see my father and I grew up in a Catholic Children Home , priest Joseph highly supported my education beyond primary level as my poor mother could not afford school fees .Excitingly I made it to Government sponsorship for University education graduating as physics and maths secondary teacher. I started supporting some children and feel particularly committed to the children of Kibwa Zone, a low income/ slum area part of Kampala According to the Uganda 2024 Census*, the median age of the population is under 18. 13% of children are orphans (defined as having lost one or more parents), 28% of them of school age have never been to school. Youth unemployment is around 83%. Kibwa is not exempt from these facts. God’s Love Home, with 60 children and a further 50 disadvantaged youth, has been established in the Kibwa community since 2006, registered in 2013 with its associated schools, Gods Love Nursery and Primary School (GLS) as well as Gods Love Vocational School registered in 2019. I am thrilled by what has been achieved There are underlying challenges that both reflect the general national position and the particular nature of the poverty of our area. It is very hard to get school fees from poor parents and inevitably our priority is income to feed our children 1. Our primary school lacks a lot to get to the real standard needed to acquire a UNEB centre for examination. We need Proper Desks, Electricity Installation. Our primary school building needs upgrading with work on ceilings and gutters. We also need of big piece of Land for play ground preferably an acre of Land around the school. Games and Sports are part of learning! 2. GLH children get good primary school at GLS. P7 leaving results are good. However we cannot afford secondary fees. Only a very few children get outside sponsorship for Lower Secondary, the rest have a self learning course before taking the Government S4 exam. We need sponsors for students to go to proper schools. (Remarkably, over the last 2 years all students have obtained the Lower Secondary Leaving Certificate, but their standard is questionable). 3. Some on the S4 self learning course have got A and B brades, a remarkable achievement from that foundation. We need sponsors for students to go to S5,6 schools and eventually university Our long term goals 1. To provide basic necessities - food, clothing, safe shelter, education, and health support. 2. To provide holistic care and support to children infected and affected by HIV/AIDS domestic violence until they reach self-sustainability. 3. To improve the social welfare and economic stability of orphans, single mothers, and disadvantaged youth in Kibwa Zone. 4. To create sustainable livelihoods through better farming, poultry, and other income-generating activities. We have a piece of Land very far from our Home, we are praying to purchase a nearby piece to get fully involved in the farming system. One challenge is that the nearby piece of Land is quite expensive with an acre of Land at 30M in affair range but 50M to 100M in very close distance from GLH. CONCLUSION Children in Kibwa Zone did not choose to be orphaned or vulnerable.
