Outreach Uganda

Outreach Uganda is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization headquartered in Colorado and dedicated to helping empower Ugandans, especially women and children, to rise out of poverty. To do this, we work with village groups in Uganda to bring hope and improve lives, especially in the areas of education, women's empowerment, and self-sufficiency through job creation. Initially, our village groups help support themselves and their families through sales of paper beaded jewelry and other craft items. The beaders save money from their bead sales so they can then start own group or individual businesses to supplement their income and eventually we hope it will be their main source of income. Our primary school in northern Uganda now has 500 students from Nursery through P-7 (sixth grade). They have no playground equipment at all. This project will build a large school-size playground with a separate area for Nursery students. The playground will be constructed to U.S./European standards so that it can last for 10 years. Studies show that a playground of this nature helps increase students' academic performance, while reducing absenteeism and aggression. project reportread updates from the field

Since 2007, our Jinja women's group has diligently learned business skills and used internally generated microloans to build and expand their businesses. They want to escape the Jinja slums and own their homes. Help them achieve their dream. We have purchased land for these homes. Ten ladies each need a $1900 down payment (2/3 to raise on globalgiving) to begin construction of the first phase of ten homes. Ladies who once lived on under $1 per day will escape poverty forever. Help 120 Uganda women move from the slum to a home

The project will help 120 Uganda women defray the cost of home ownership through acquisition of land. Our women beaders in Jinja have been displaced by the 20 year LRA war in the north that ended in late 2008. Many of the women are now forced to live in the slums in one-room, rented makeshift homes that are constructed of little more than cardboard or dirt. Our courageous women make a living today through sales of beads or micro businesses. This project will move them into homes of their own. project reportread updates from the field
Build 2 Classrooms for 120 Uganda Students

This project will build two nursery classrooms for 120 students in Agwata, a poor Northern Uganda community. Most community members lived in IDP (internally displaced persons) camps until mid-2009 when they re-settled their ancestral lands after an internal war ended. All previous community structures were destroyed during the war. Besides providing a strong education foundation, the Nursery School will provide a noon meal to the children while their mothers hand hoe land to raise cash crops. project reportread updates from the field
