Currently, our youngest nursery students plus our kindergarteners have classrooms in a very dilapidated mud and thatch building which was originally built in 2010. Rain and wind are quickly making the walls disappear plus it is not secure. The classes must carry their plastic chairs back and forth to a small locked storage building every day. They're been patient and understanding. We would like to finally be able to provide two decent lockable cement block classrooms for them.
These are the last two classes which still meet in the most dilapidated building which is made of mud and thatch. Our teachers, parents and children are concerned that it will not last another rainy season due to its poor condition. Plus, it cannot be locked so no materials can be stored inside. Therefore, only plastic chairs are used plus a portable blackboard. All must be carried to and from the two classrooms daily. The floor is bare dirt floor. The doorways are open.
The two new cement classroom blocks will house the two classes plus a middle office area which we expect may be utilized for our sixth grade girls to board at the school. The classrooms will be sturdy and be protected from rain and wind and fully lockable. We will upgrade the teaching materials and even have wooden tables and/or desks once the building is built since we know they will be secure. This will provide a much better learning environment.
This project will drastically improve the overall level of education and should improve the students' learning and test scores. This will provide them with a more solid foundation to their education. It will also attract better teachers when they see the school has solid structures conducive to learning.
