Many families in Agwata are now eating just one meal a day. A prolonged drought destroyed the first crop harvest of the year, leaving families with less food and driving up the cost of what is available. Rising fuel prices have also made transporting food to the school more expensive.
That makes the meals provided at Agwata Primary School especially important. In this photo, cooks Isaac and Miriam are preparing posho, a staple made from ground maize, for the students. For some children, the food they receive at school may be their most reliable meal of the day.
The school’s parents are making extraordinary sacrifices to keep their children in school. Many continue to pay transportation, books and other expenses for children attending secondary school—even when it means those at home may have only one meal a day.
Your support of this project helps Agwata keep its students fed and focused on learning during an exceptionally difficult year. Thank you for helping these children continue to thrive despite the challenges their families face.
