Senior Volunteers Give Back: One Smile at a Time

According to a report by the Corporation for National and Community Service, research shows that individuals who do volunteer work have lower mortality rates, greater functional ability, and lower rates of depression later in life than those who do not volunteer. Older volunteers are the most likely to receive greater benefits from volunteering because they are provided with physical and social activity and a sense of purpose.

Cedar Village’s senior volunteer program provides the opportunity for the residents to live with purpose. Our resident volunteers collaborate in planning their weekly projects and monthly outings to local charitable organizations throughout the Greater Cincinnati and Dayton area, like Ronald McDonald House, Crayons to Computers, homeless shelters, and more.

Many of our volunteers average age 80 and older, were active volunteers in their community before moving to Cedar Village, and are able to continue their volunteer work throughout retirement through our senior volunteer program. It is never too late to do good for the community, and individuals who are new to volunteering are always welcome.

Our volunteers always wear their purple shirts and their smiles while sharing stories and bonding with the individuals they are serving in organizations throughout the community. We are proud of our senior volunteers and the difference they make in the community!

Help Elder Abuse Victims Begin Their Lives Again

Each year an estimated 1 in 10 older Americans are victims of physical, sexual, psychological, & financial abuse and/or neglect. Many individuals do not realize a loved one or caregiver is abusing them physically, mentally, emotionally, etc…until it is too late. Cedar Village and the Shalom Center partner with community agencies, law enforcement, hospitals, and many others to raise awareness in the community to encourage early intervention and provide a safety net for vulnerable older adults

The Shalom Center for the Prevention of Elder Abuse is the first emergency elder abuse shelter in the state of Ohio, the only shelter for victims of elder abuse in the tri-state area, & 1 of only 12 in the nation. Other local programs are ill-equipped for the special needs of the elderly. The Shalom Center for the Prevention of Elder Abuse operates through partnering with Cedar Village and the location is kept confidential. The team at Cedar Village manages & funds every aspect of the counseling & care delivered so people age 65 & better suffering from abuse or neglect are able to heal safely at no cost to themselves.Throughout their stay, individuals in the Shalom Center receive necessary services- including a full range of health care and supportive services and a coordinated system of psychological, spiritual, and legal care.

Funds raised for the Shalom Center are used to offset costs incurred for medical care, social services, nursing care, therapy, and other necessary items. Often, elder abuse victims arrive to the Shalom Center with only the clothes they are wearing. Your support helps us meet the critical need of providing care & support to victims of elder abuse while ensuring our ability to continue breaking the cycle of abuse and provides those in need with items they need to begin their life again.

Wish Granted

Cedar Village strives to make wishes come true every day. The Cedar Village Chai Hopes Fund helps to make dreams and wishes come true for residents. Through this special fund, our staff is able to give special experiences, outings, and items to our residents who have little to no family members. One of our Hospice team members reflected on this experience saying she is “…very grateful for the Chai Hopes Fund, as it has allowed our team the opportunity to enhance the lives of our patients. Granting wishes allows our patients to live out the rest of days with dignity and comfort."

Your donation will help us continue making dreams come true.
