This project will provide education and early intervention therapy to children with autism spectrum disorder and/or with pervasive developmental disorder. Six children who are diagnosed with ASP or PDD will participate with the special instructors, teacher helpers and speech language pathologist. Socialization is our main goal for teaching the life skills that will be needed for higher level functioning. This project being developed by the Pennsylvania Diversity Children's Organization.
As per the Center for Disease Control website, currently 1 in 68 children is estimated to be on the autism spectrum. There are numerous therapy locations in the Philadelphia area, both private and government-sponsored, available to families affected by the disorder. However, there is just one that is available to the bilingual/trilingual speaking population, the Pennsylvania Diversity Children's Organization.
Six children with autism spectrum disorder and/or pervasive developmental disorder from bilingual/trilingual cultural backgrounds will participate in our program working with our bilingual/trilingual specialists - special instructor, speech language pathologist, occupational therapist and physical therapist who will use the most effective strategies, including visual tools and toys with different textures, and using technology. Our families will get daily help from our bilingual specialists.
We will educate six children with autism spectrum disorder and/or pervasive developmental disorder and their families working cooperatively as a team. Our four bilingual specialists will work with children to educate and help them to understand their instructors better, and also they will be able to pick up English more easily, and as such will be able to progress faster. The proposed long-term program will grow up, and we are planning to enroll more children and help their families.
