The project will support 600 unemployed youths to educate the community on improved waste management practices, establish parish waste recycling systems, promote organic farming and create green areas
In Kira Town Council, current waste management practices include: indiscriminate disposal of unsorted waste (often in bags) in compounds or at communal waste dumping sites; regular burning of waste releasing tones of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere annually and; a poor culture of waste recycling. Due to leachates from bathroom wastes and poor waste management practices at local industries, most sources of ground water supplies that are used by low income communities are getting contaminated.
The project will: (a) promote the practice of sorting wastes before disposal; (b)Set up parish waste recycling centres; (c)Demonstrate and promote appropriate organic farming practices and; (d)Set-up tree planting centres in communities and schools
The project will lead to: Improved waste management practices at household and institutional level; increased income among unemployed youths; increased number of green spaces in the community; improved health of communities and; a cleaner environment
