3D Print Upper Limb Prosthetics for 150 in Uganda

In September 2025, World Action Fund Uganda implemented a focused activity under the Prosthetic Support for 800 in Uganda (70696) project. Despite receiving $472.27 out of $600 raised though initially targeted $34,400, the funds were strategically utilized to conduct assessment and trial fitment sessions for ten individuals with limb loss, restoring mobility and dignity to people who had been living without prosthetic support for years.

Activities Implemented

The project team first collaborated with local disability networks and rehabilitation officers to identify ten beneficiaries from diverse communities. Each participant underwent a thorough clinical assessment, including measurement of stump length, joint flexibility, and alignment requirements, ensuring that each prosthetic would be tailored for comfort and functionality. Trial fittings were conducted, and beneficiaries were guided through walking exercises and posture adjustments to confirm the fit.

Transportation was a significant barrier for these beneficiaries, many of whom live in remote areas. A portion of the funds was dedicated to ensuring safe travel for all participants to and from the assessment center. Detailed documentation was completed for each individual, including case notes, photographs, and feedback, to guide future prosthetic fabrication and follow-up care.

Financial Narrative

The $472.27 received was carefully allocated to cover all necessary aspects of the activity. The largest portion of the funds, approximately $150, was used to provide transportation support, allowing all ten beneficiaries to attend the sessions despite living in distant rural communities. Around $120 went toward materials and consumables, including measurement tools, temporary sockets, alignment aids, and other assessment equipment. Another $110 was allocated to facilitate the prosthetic technicians, covering their allowances and meals during the two-day assessment and fitment exercise. The remaining $42.27 was used for documentation, bank charges, printing of forms, communication with beneficiaries, and minimal administrative coordination.

Even though the funds received were less than the original target, careful management ensured that all ten beneficiaries were fully assessed and fitted with trial prosthetics. Every dollar contributed directly to improving access to rehabilitation and supporting the well-being of persons with disabilities.

Outcomes and Learnings

All ten participants successfully received initial assessments and trial fittings, and they expressed significant relief and hope at being able to regain mobility. The activity strengthened community awareness of prosthetic services and built a foundation for follow-up care. The experience also highlighted the need for sustained funding and logistical support to expand the initiative to reach the remaining 790 beneficiaries under the project’s long-term goal.

Looking Ahead

With continued support, World Action Fund Uganda plans to expand outreach, provide post-fitment care, and strengthen partnerships with local health facilities and rehabilitation networks to ensure sustainable, inclusive access to prosthetic services for 800 individuals across Uganda.
