Summary

In Vietnam, a lot of school restrooms fall short of meeting acceptable standards due to several key factors. The neglect by educational institutions that consider restrooms as mere "auxiliary structures", and schools' financial constraints hinder maintenance and construction efforts. Additionally, students' limited understanding of proper restroom usage and maintenance accelerates the deterioration of these facilities. Accessing clean restrooms in disadvantaged areas is even more challenging.

Challenge

In Vietnam, a lot of school restrooms fall short of meeting acceptable standards due to several key factors. The neglect by educational institutions that consider restrooms as mere "auxiliary structures", and schools' financial constraints hinder maintenance and construction efforts. Additionally, students' limited understanding of proper restroom usage and maintenance accelerates the deterioration of these facilities. Accessing clean restrooms in disadvantaged areas is even more challenging.

Solution

This project encompasses five key activities for participating schools, which include: (1) constructing and upgrading 1,000 school restrooms, (2) installing handwashing instruction signs in restroom areas as per Ministry of Health guidelines, (3) providing handwashing water or soap, (4) conducting a minimum of 60 training sessions on clean water, personal and environmental hygiene, and proper restroom use, and (5) hosting a minimum of 15 "School Health and Hygiene" festivals.

Long-Term Impact

The project aims to furnish students in underprivileged areas with access to clean, welcoming and safe restrooms. This initiative not only promotes better health among students, encouraging regular school attendance and improving focus on studies, but also raises the community's awareness, knowledge, and skills related to the appropriate utilization and upkeep of restrooms, as well as the importance of conserving clean water and adhering to standards of personal and environmental hygiene.
