In arid and semi-arid regions like Turkana County, access to Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) infrastructure is far more than a basic utility issue it is an educational crisis. Across many local communities, school-aged children particularly girls miss multiple days of learning every single week due to water scarcity, domestic water-fetching responsibilities, and a lack of functional sanitation facilities. This outlines the direct impacts of inadequate WASH facilities on school attendance and retention, detailing why clean water is a foundational prerequisite for uninterrupted learning.
Water Scarcity and the Classroom
Education is a fundamental human right, yet its realization is severely constrained by environmental and infrastructural gaps. In Turkana, prolonged dry spells and scarce water points force communities to travel vast distances to secure daily supplies. The children education learning is negatively impacted and there is a need for addressing this water challenge to ensure children stay in class and learn.
