Most of our young men and women in Nairobi, Kibera slums and Kisumu, Nyamasaria are unable to access college or university education and lack practical skills that can help them earn a stable income. At the same time, communities continue to need affordable access to reliable renewable energy solutions. This project responds by combining solar skills training with lifeskills and job readiness support so youth can transition into income-generating work.
There is a compounding crisis of youth exclusion, economic stagnation, and energy poverty within Kenya's informal and peri-urban settlements. Most young men and women miss out on opportunities as a result of high rate of unemployment and lack of skills. Amplify Hope Africa has identified three systemic bottlenecks that trap youth in extreme poverty: Which includes the missing midlle educational chasm, the energy infrastructure deficit and the gendered economic trap.
We will directly recruit and fully fund 100 vulnerable youths (50 in Kibera, 50 in Nyamasaria) split equally by gender (50% young men, 50% young women). Youths aged 18 to 25 years. Socio-Economic Profile: The project will support High school dropouts or Form four leavers who are unable to afford tertiary education, youths who are earning less than the Kenyan minimum wage through casual, irregular day labor and young single mothers seeking a sustainable income source to support their children.
Economic Autonomy: 100 youths earn a sustainable income, reducing crime and vulnerability. Gender Equality: Active recruitment of young women directly challenges male dominance in STEM fields. Environmental Impact: Reduction in kerosene use and carbon emissions in informal settlements. Sustainability Model: Solar hubs run by graduates generate continuous revenue to fund future student cohorts. Job creation and employment: 80% of youths secure employment or launch solar micro-enterprises.
