This initiative equips the Indigenous Maasai youth in Narok, Kenya, to cultivate leadership through practical learning, mentorship, and civic engagement opportunities. This will enable the youth to participate in shaping policies, strengthen community governance, and drive sustainable development. Indigenous Masai youth will benefit by ensuring community voices shape decisions that affect their future.
Indigenous Maasai youth continue to face significant barriers to meaningful participation in governance, especially the vast majority of whom are in Narok, Kenya. Low civic engagement, weak policies, and eroding indigenous knowledge are challenges that hinder the Indigenous Maasai youth from contributing to advancing sustainable development that impacts Maasai communities in the Narok region.
The project will equip indigenous Maasai youth through legal literacy bootcamps, policy drafting workshops, mock legislatures, and intergenerational dialogues. At the same time, the youth participants will continue to develop policy proposals and engage directly with county leaders through advocacy forums and public submissions to influence governance and champion Indigenous rights.
The project will establish a new generation of empowered Indigenous youth leaders equipped to participate meaningfully in governance and advocate for community development. The establishment of a Youth Policy Caucus will sustain advocacy beyond the project, and over time this will contribute to more inclusive governance, stronger civic participation, and greater protection of Indigenous rights for the indigenous Maasai youth.
