Pakistan's youth (18- 29) , constituting 1/5th of population, hold immense potential but face challenges that make them vulnerable to radicalization. Excluded from key conversations, they're often affected by divisive narratives. The "Youth as Change Makers" project aims to empower them by hosting panel discussions in universities across Pakistan, connecting students with experts to explore the impact of radicalization. The goal is to cultivate a generation that promotes peace & tolerance.
In 2023, Pakistan ranked 162nd out of 181 on the Commonwealth's Global Youth Development Index, scoring lowest in Asia due to a 34.3% drop in Political and Civic Participation. Economic challenges and regional conflicts have fostered conditions where radicalization can grow. With limited engagement opportunities and decision-making skills, youth are particularly vulnerable to extremist recruitment. Efforts to counter radicalization have struggled to effectively strengthen youth resilience
This project will raise awareness among Pakistani youth by collaborating with 10 universities in key regions. In partnership with local institutions, we'll host panel discussions on the effects of radicalization, featuring experts, including government officials and specialists. These sessions will engage students in dialogue on social responsibility, tolerance, and community cohesion, equipping them with the knowledge and tools to counter extremist narratives and promote a culture of peace.
The panel discussions will enhance understanding of the socio-political factors driving radicalization in Pakistan. By fostering open dialogue and critical thinking, these initiatives will empower youth to confront extremist narratives and advocate for tolerance. Participants will build analytical skills and social responsibility, enabling them to lead peace-building efforts and create a support network for ongoing discussions about resilience and inclusivity in their communities.
