What drives the youth of today?
Over the summer, we came to you with a request to support our efforts to delve into that question -- and your generous contribution helped bring our latest story to fruition!
Generation Activist: Young People Choose Protest over Traditional Politics, presents findings of a growing global gap in informal political participation between young adults and those over 40.
Published with eight leading media brands from around the world, the story further reports that young adults are leaving votes on the table. In fact, if all eligible young people voted, they would reclaim about 8% of the total vote.
Our story contains rigorous on-the-ground reporting at the heart of several key moments and movements including Zimbabwe’s recent presidential election and the United States’ March for Our Lives campaign. And donations received via your crowdfunding support enabled the Orb Media team’s travels for this reporting. Talk about the impact of a contribution!
We leave you with this: The line between formal and informal political engagement has always been permeable -- and organizing via the street and internet can’t help but influence policy. What remains to be seen: Should young people fall in line and accept how traditional politics works? Or does politics have to be reinvented to include the young generations’ voices?
What will you do when you want to see change?
Join the conversation on social media by answering this question using #GenerationActivist, and share the story with your friends, family, colleagues, and fellow global citizens to find out how they engage in politics.
Thank you for supporting our work!
With gratitude,
Molly
