Youngsters challenge poverty through skateboarding

Many classes have gone by since we started this program, and of course kids abilities both on the board and in their lives have increased greatly.

Last month we visited a local skate-park where they faced their own fears and dared to go down a ramp and practice some of the skills they’ve mastered on the local park on a real skaters paradise, it was great to mix with other skaters that share their same passion for boards and interact on and off the board.

During the last classes we’ve made a new innovation on the workshop by mixing basketball and skateboarding, a brand new sport, where from the boards they pass the ball into the hoops, a new challenge that is on the way of becoming a hit sport during this summer!

On an organizational level, this November 10 we will be hosting our first festival, the “Happy Cities Festival” that intends to inspire the community into thinking the type of city that we live in and how we can work to improve it. We will also be showing our work there, so if you, or anyone you know happens to be in Rosario during that date, please stop by!

Some time has gone by since we started with this skateboarding program, and as expected kids have become better every day, not only on their skills on the boards, but on how they face fears and how they keep on getting up every time they fall and keep trying till they get it right.

The group has become a tribe and has gotten attention from the neighborhood, during the times the skate program is running on the local field, many other curious kids stop there and admire these kids, and they even sometimes try a few rides on the boards.

Skateboarding is not only an opportunity for us to work on life skills such as frustration management and overcoming tough situations but it is the way to work that out on an innovative way. It is an individual sport, but it is also an excellent way to generate collaboration, team  work and empathy. All of this while having a blast out in the park while sliding over a board feeling the wind in their faces.
