Young Scientists visit Health Research Institute

By Bongani Mlambo | Project Leader

Our kickstarter group of learners from the Young Scientist Incubation Project (Y-SiP) were invited to visit Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) facility, formally called K-RITH at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

These lucky young scientists got an insiders tour of the facility labs and an experiment demonstration. This was followed by a special screening of ‘The Lucky Specials’, a feature film about tuberculosis which AHRI is involved with: http://www.theluckyspecials.com/

It was a wonderful opportunity for our learners to visit a state of the art health research facility. Learners took a tour through two laboratory facilities, the first lab is where they treat TB virus. In this lab they deal with a dangerous airborne virus so with that in mind our young scientists learnt about the safety precautions taken.

In the second lab learners were shown how scientists study the TB virus by a first year PHD student.

Learners also got to do some DNA extraction.
