How do we select our EcoLeaders? Read on!

By Dayana | Iracambi Education Coordinator

Meet Camila, one of our young forest champions
Meet Camila, one of our young forest champions

Good morning, dear supporters,

Greetings from the EcoLeaders at Iracambi and we hope you are doing well!

Down here in the forest we've been extra busy recently. We're coming to the end of the rainy season, and it's time to select our next group of EcoLeaders. So we're recruiting the next cohort through a process of self-selection. We're working with children from middle school, and we ask them to write a letter to their future selves. We'll share some of their letters in our next report, so please stay tuned!

In the meantime here are a few testimonials from the most recent cohort of EcoLeaders. These comments come from the girls' group, starting with Camila.

" My time at Iracambi was amazing! I learned a bunch of stuff - about different types of soil, about the water cycle, and about the importance of nature. We studied how ecosystems work, how each part can affect all the others, and how, if one small thing is missing the whole system won't work well.

I went to every single class at Iracambi and I really learned a whole lot. We saw lots of different animals and learned about them which was great fun. I really think we should have more places like Iracambi so that we can help look after the forest."

Isadora says this:

"This was one of the best experiences of my whole life!  I think that the work that Iracambi does is really important for everyone.  I learned a lot of new things, and I can see how important it is to have places like Iracambi. I'd love it if more people could understand that cutting trees and hunting animals shouldn't be considered normal.

I'm going to miss Iracambi a lot."

And finally, here's Mariana.

"My time with the EcoLeaders project was so gratifying and made me so happy! I loved having the opportunity to learn all about the environment, and I can't wait for our graduation party. It was so good to go to Iracambi and check the camera traps to see which animals we had managed to film.  l really enjoyed exploring the trails, and mixing the theory with practical activities. I learned a whole lot, and I'll never forget this amazing project that I was lucky enough to join during sixth grade."

With your support we're opening new horizons for the next generation of forest champions, and they're wasting no time putting their knowledge to work. They're planning to make a presentation to the town council about the importance of the forest. How wonderful is that?

Thank you so much for helping to make it possible.

More soon, and this letter comes with love,

Dayana, Binka and the Young EcoLeaders
