Q1 16 report

The level of activity throughout Yankee Golden Retriever Rescue, especially at Riverview, continues.  Over the past quarter we have investigated and decided to bring over a number of homeless Golden Retrievers from Turkey.  While this may seem confusing to some, there is a large homeless Golden Retriever population in that country.  If you follow the news, you can see that Turkey is not immune from the effects of strife and war.  Our urgency to bring more dogs over has increased as a result of this, and we have brought over at least ten dogs so far from Turkey.

The dogs that have come over have typified what we know and love of this breed.  After a long 12+ hour flight, they stepped out of their travel containers and immediately looked for someone to love.  These dogs have come over with a few health issues, but not as many as dogs that we’ve brought up from the south.  Heartworm isn’t an issue with these dogs, and many are cared for by volunteer veterinarians in Turkey along with care and feeding being provided by a group of dedicated volunteers.

Years ago, Golden Retriever puppies were brought over to Turkey as a popular status symbol.  They were often given as wedding or birthday gifts, and after the popularity of this waned, the dogs were either neglected or left behind in forested areas.

The need to induct these dogs into our C.A.R.E. program hasn’t occurred since many dogs in Turkey that require a lot of medical attention do not get what they need.  It is rare for dogs to live to an older age, or what we would consider to be “seniors.”

We will continue to work with a few select groups to bring more homeless Golden Retrievers over from Turkey.  Our desire to continue with this successful program is based on our desire to return to our core mission of rehoming homeless Golden Retrievers.  Our program to integrate Golden mixes into our program has also been successful, and the combination of both programs has returned our intake volume back to the point where we now have many more dogs available for our large backlog of approved adoptive families.  These dogs are starting to process out to their forever homes now.

This report’s photograph is of Sophie, who came over from Turkey and is now being spoiled, sleeping on the couch after playing outside with her family.
