Supporting Medical Care for Liberia's Most Needy

By Delano King | Founder & President

Summary

The Delano King Foundation's project, "Fund Medical Care for Liberia's Poor and Suffering," aims to provide essential medical care to the most vulnerable populations in Liberia. This initiative addresses the critical healthcare needs of impoverished communities, focusing on improving access to medical services, enhancing health outcomes, and supporting local healthcare infrastructure.

In Liberia, access to quality medical care remains a significant challenge, particularly for the poor and marginalized communities. Despite efforts to improve the healthcare system, many families still struggle to receive the medical attention they need due to financial constraints, lack of facilities, and limited access to trained healthcare professionals. By supporting initiatives that focus on healthcare for the poor, we can make a tangible difference in the lives of many.

Project Objectives

  1. Provide Access to Medical Care: Ensure that the poorest and most vulnerable individuals in Liberia have access to essential medical services.
  2. Improve Health Outcomes: Reduce the incidence of preventable diseases and improve overall health outcomes through timely medical interventions.
  3. Support Healthcare Infrastructure: Strengthen local healthcare facilities by providing necessary medical supplies and equipment.
  4. Raise Awareness: Educate communities about health and hygiene practices to prevent the spread of diseases.

Project Activities

  1. Medical Camps: Organize regular medical camps in remote and underserved areas to provide free medical check-ups, treatments, and medications.
  2. Partnerships with Local Clinics: Collaborate with local healthcare providers to enhance their capacity to serve the community effectively.
  3. Training Healthcare Workers: Conduct training programs for local healthcare workers to improve their skills and knowledge.
  4. Community Outreach: Implement community outreach programs to educate the public on health and hygiene practices.

Impact and Outcomes

The project has already made significant strides in improving the health and well-being of Liberia's poor and suffering. Key achievements include:

  • Increased Access to Healthcare: Many individuals have received free medical care through the project's medical camps and partnerships with local clinics.
  • Community Empowerment: Through education and outreach programs, communities are better informed about health and hygiene practices, leading to healthier lifestyles.

Stories of Impact: Steven Zoe and Sackie Poison

Steven Zoe's Journey to Healing Steven Zoe's story is a poignant example of the Foundation's impact. Born into a poverty-stricken family in Liberia, Steven has battled a mysterious illness since infancy. His condition, characterized by painful rashes on his hands and feet, left him isolated and unable to attend school. The Delano King Foundation, moved by Steven's plight, intervened to provide medical treatment at the Jahmale Medical Solutions Hospital. This intervention, sponsored by the World Medical Ministry, demonstrates that Steven is not alone in his battle for life. It has renewed his hope for the future.

However, Steven’s journey is far from over. After extensive consultations, it has become clear that Steven requires advanced medical treatment that is not available in Liberia. The health journey is a long and costly one, and without financial support, it remains an unattainable dream for Steven and his family. The generosity of our donors can bridge the gap between despair and hope for Steven. It can provide him with the opportunity to travel to receive the necessary medical care and embark on the road to recovery.

Sackie Poison's Transformation Sackie Poison, a 39-year-old former child soldier and drug-addicted youth lived in the Kampala Ghetto in Bong County, Liberia. For over 25 years, Sackie suffered from a severe condition affecting his genital area, causing excruciating pain and social stigma. Referred to derogatorily as a "Zogo," Sackie had no means to afford the necessary surgery.

On Christmas Day 2022, the Delano King Foundation team visited the Kampala Ghetto, distributing meals and sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ. During this visit, Delano King met Sackie and was moved by his plight. The foundation funded Sackie's surgery, which not only saved his life but also led to a spiritual transformation. Sackie accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior, was baptized, and reconciled with his family. His story is a testament to the foundation's mission of ministering to both the physical and spiritual needs of the poor and suffering.

Challenges and Solutions

  1. Logistical Challenges: The project aims to address logistical challenges by raising funds to purchase two Toyota Land Cruiser Jeeps. These vehicles will be crucial in overcoming the poor road conditions, ensuring that our medical teams can deliver timely and effective care to those who need it the most. Additionally, the project will partner with local clinics familiar with the terrain and logistics to further enhance our reach and efficiency.
  2. Resource Constraints: Limited financial and material resources are a hurdle. The foundation’s project, “Fund Medical Care for Liberia’s Poor and Suffering,” was initiated to raise funds and seek donations to help bridge the gap in healthcare resources.
  3. Healthcare Worker Shortage: The project aims to address the shortage of healthcare workers by organizing training programs and workshops to enhance local capacity.
  4. Critical Medical Needs: The project aims to address the critical medical needs of the poor and suffering by providing financial support to children and families in dire need, ensuring they receive the medical attention they rightfully deserve. Additionally, the project will elevate the quality of care for the impoverished and marginalized by equipping hospitals with essential equipment, supplies, and technical support.

Long-Term Impact

The project will significantly enhance healthcare access and awareness, enabling the foundation to highlight the critical need for accessible healthcare. This initiative will inspire further efforts to improve medical facilities and services within Liberia. Additionally, the project will empower the community by bringing people together, fostering a sense of solidarity and collective action. This unity can lead to sustained community involvement and support for other individuals in need.

The Delano King Foundation's long-term goal is to raise funds to provide medical care to more poor and suffering Liberians across the country. The foundation aims to construct clinics in some of the most vulnerable communities, providing free medical care to impoverished children and families. By expanding its reach and resources, the foundation hopes to create a lasting impact on Liberia's healthcare system and improve the lives of countless individuals.

Healthcare Access Statistics in Liberia

  • Physician Density: Liberia has only 0.84 physicians per 1,000 population, significantly lower than the recommended minimum threshold of 2.3 healthcare workers per 1,000 population needed to achieve essential health coverage.
  • Nurse and Midwife Density: There are only 0.61 nurses and midwives per 1,000 population.
  • Hospital Beds: Liberia has only 0.03 hospital beds per 1,000 population, far below the average for low-income countries, which have 0.9 hospital beds per 1,000 population.
  • Access to Basic Health Services: Only 42% of the population has access to basic health services within an hour of travel time.
  • Rural Population: About 70% of the population lives in rural areas, where access to healthcare facilities is limited.
  • Poverty Rate: Approximately 40% of the population lives below the poverty line, further hindering access to healthcare.
