For many rural women in Faisalabad, earning a reliable income while caring for their families remains a challenge. Through AWARD Pakistan’s Women’s Vegetable Farms Initiative, women are discovering new opportunities to improve their livelihoods through organic vegetable farming and sustainable agriculture.
One such woman is Rubina, a mother of three who wanted to contribute to her family’s income and provide better educational opportunities for her children. With the help of a small revolving loan provided through the initiative, she leased an acre of land and started cultivating seasonal vegetables.
Rubina now grows a variety of vegetables, including spinach, coriander, carrots, radishes, cabbage, cauliflower, peas, and turnips. She is also preparing to grow summer vegetables such as cucumbers, bottle gourds, bitter gourds, and okra. With the practical training and guidance provided by AWARD Pakistan, she has learned to manage her crops more efficiently and improve her farming practices.
Her dedication has helped her build a customer base in nearby markets that appreciates the freshness and quality of her produce. The income she earns from selling vegetables contributes to her household expenses and helps meet her children’s educational needs.
Beyond improving her family’s financial situation, farming has strengthened Rubina’s confidence and encouraged her to take a more active role in household decisions. Her experience has also motivated other women in her village to consider small-scale vegetable farming as a source of income and a pathway toward greater independence.
Rubina’s journey demonstrates how access to modest financial resources, practical knowledge, and continued support can help rural women turn their aspirations into meaningful livelihood opportunities. As more women become interested in kitchen gardening and vegetable cultivation, the initiative is helping create a foundation for stronger household incomes and more resilient rural communities.
With the continued support of GlobalGiving donors and the commitment of AWARD Pakistan, the Women’s Vegetable Farms Initiative is empowering rural women with the skills, resources, and confidence to build sustainable livelihoods.
Every seed planted brings the promise of a better harvest, greater independence, and a brighter future for women and their families.
