In Dawasamu, Fiji, our collaborative project works on community development, focusing on women empowerment. Our goal is to support gender equality initiatives and workshops that raise awareness on gender gap related issues whilst providing practical solutions. The pandemic is posing greater risks to women and girls, suppressed by poverty, violence and inequality. Our project collaborates with local community members and organisations to help women and girls empower themselves.
Fijian women face gender inequality challenges that affect their education, social security, income generation, and public health. In 2020, Fiji was ranked 103 out of 153 countries from East Asia and the Pacific in The Global Gender Gap Index. 96 million people will be pushed into poverty by the end of 2021, of which 47 million will be women (UN, 2020), making the challenge for women greater than pre-covid times.
The project focuses upon continuous knowledge exchange with the local community and partners to ensure effective, long-term sustainable change. Through training and workshops, the project builds capacity with key stakeholders around environmental education and awareness, health data analysis and healthcare support.
The project works on immediate change through raising awareness on gender inequality whilst building capacity that improves income generation and living standards for women. Additionally, an ongoing mentoring program offers members of the community opportunities to assist and lead projects on women empowerment.
