Education about social entrepreneurship

By Elizabeth A Appleyard | Program Administrator

One focus of AIL’s work is to develop and expand entrepreneurship, especially social entrepreneurship among women and girls.

One way AIL reaches youth is through its Youth Club which has over 50 female members. In May, the club discussed the topic of entrepreneurship with an expert in the subject.  She described the  principles and guidelines used by the founders of start-ups and and applying these to a business that directly generates social change or impacts a social cause.   A social entrepreneur is primarily motivated by a desire to alleviate some kind of systemic social or cultural problem in the context of profit and economic prosperity, social equity and environment and sustainability.

The young women discussed the 5 characteristics of social entrepreneurship and the qualities of a successful social entrepreneur. These include: deep empathy, innovation, a systemic viewpoint, a sustainable approach and involving changemakers.

The discussion encouraged the women to voice their opinions and visualize how they might become social entrepreneurs. Role models are crucial to helping young people find the self-belief they need to create change in society. AIL’s goal is to build the capacity of women and girls so they can contribute their talents to society.

The Youth Club is only one way AIL empowers women. Its Learning Centers provide education, AIL trained teachers provide quality education and health clinics provide vital care for females, workshops give the indepth knowledge women need in topics such as health, leadership, conflict management and entrepreneurship.

Thank you for your support which is helping Afghan women improve their lives.
