AIL’s goal of empowering Afghan women focuses on education and health education but encompasses many other aspects of life as well one of which is the legal world. The Learning Centers give messages about the law and rights during lessons and Dr. Yacoobi saw a need for a legal aid clinic.

AIL opened a Legal Aid Clinic to aid poor women who have no other means of legal advice and help. Each month the team of 5 female lawyers dispense advice, handle cases from consultation to trial. In July, the clinic dealt with 9 consultation cases, 3 family cases and 6 legal cases all of which were pursued and closed within the month.

Afghan women will be empowered when they have knowledge, self-confidence and awareness of their capacity to contribute and their rights in society. Legal knowledge is part of the empowerment equation. Lawyers from the clinic attend broadcast sessions on Dr. Yacoobi’s private radio station, Meraj.

The two legal programs broadcast on Meraj Radio have the objectives of bringing justice, prosperity, peace, to make people aware, to decrease the rates of violence and to decrease citizens' problems. They try to enlighten people's minds and develop their awareness about citizenship rights.  The two programs are Ethics and Morning Messenger. Ethics covers legal issues and included election crime, environmental crime, crimes against historical and cultural monuments, whistle blowers, crimes against children and abuse of women and children. In addition, other areas covered are office corruption, gambling, misuse of authority. Morning Messenger is broadcast every Thursday and is in a legal roundtable discussion format. The main topic this year has been women’s rights under Islam including livelihood, dowry, possessions and property and working rights.

Thank you for your support for Afghan women as they gain knowledge and skills to improve the lives of their families.
