Women in E-Commerce- Promise of a Bright Future

In the year 2020-21, as the COVID pandemic altered market dynamics adversely impacting employment opportunities for four-wheeler drivers, the growing opportunities for women in the e-commerce sector came as a silver lining. Azad saw this as an opportunity to enable women to claim their space in the male-dominant sphere of e-commerce delivery. And we expanded our Women with Wheels training program to include two-wheeler training. Since then, we have been continually engaging with government stakeholders, market players and forming partnerships to facilitate a gender-just infrastructure in the e-commerce sector, including safe and hygienic public washrooms, separate changing rooms for women in e-commerce delivery hubs, equal pay as men, availability of charging infrastructure for e-vehicles, and so on.

In the year 2022-23, we trained 175 women from marginalised communities as professional two-wheeler riders. 111 women entered the e-commerce industry as Delivery Executives in various companies including- Big Basket, Delhivery, Even Cargo, Dominos and Flipkart across Delhi, Jaipur, Chennai and Kolkata. Together, they have generated a cumulative wealth of USD .15 Million for themselves and their family.

“Earlier I used to be very afraid. I did not step out of the house even to buy essential items for myself. After coming to Azad and joining work, I can now go anywhere and take my own decisions. Neither am I afraid of anyone,” says Khushi (name changed).

Khushi lives with her family in the Nag Talai Kachi Basti in Jhalana, Jaipur. Her father and 2 brothers are employed as sanitation workers with the Municipal corporation. When she initially joined Azad’s Women with Wheels program, her neighbours used to discourage her by saying that it wasn’t safe for women to go out at odd hours. With firm resolve to improve her family’s situation, Khushi completed her two-wheeler training and started working as a Delivery Partner with Big Basket. Khushi is proud of becoming financially independent and contributing to her family’s income.

Before joining Azad, Anjali (name changed) worked in a factory where she made electric plugs. She has also done patient care work ensuring their timely medication and meals. “My earnings were okay but the work timings were very long. I had a 12-hour shift from 8 am to 8 pm. I would work outside and return home to more household work. After joining Big Basket, my work timings are much more flexible. I work from 6:30-7 in the morning till 1:30 in the afternoon. After this, I go for my tuition and computer classes,” says Anjali.

Anjali completed her two-wheeler training in Delhi in 2022 after which she joined Big Basket as a Delivery Partner. The flexibility that came with Anjali’s job has allowed her to rejoin education, which she had to leave due to financial constraints and the sudden demise of her father when she was very young. Anjali has bought her own Scooty on EMI and she adds, “I pay my Scooty’s EMI and tuition fees through my own earning at Big Basket. And it makes me happy that I don’t need to ask anyone for money.”

“Ever since I have joined work, my husband and my mother take care of my child when I am at work,” shared Sujata (name changed) who is working as a Delivery Executive with Delhivery in Kolkata. Sujata lives with her husband and child in Kolkata. The COVID pandemic had worsened her financial situation. But, with a dream in her eyes, she joined two-wheeler training in Kolkata and is now shaping a bright future for herself and her family.

Azad’s Women with Wheels Program equips resource-poor women with transformative skills to become professional chauffeurs and riders. The two-wheeler training, started in 2021, has ensured women’s entry into the male-dominated sphere of e-commerce transport. Many more women like Khushi, Anjali and Sujata have gained technical skills like two-wheeler riding including electric scooter, vehicle maintenance, and rights-based life skills like knowledge of gender, patriarchy, legal rights, self-defence, communication and GPS navigation.

This year, 175 women were trained as professional two-wheeler riders and 111 of them entered the e-commerce industry as Delivery Executives. These women have been able to push many boundaries and have gained mobility, independence, challenged gender based violence, built assets, pursued higher education and negotiated for equal share of household work.

The Road Ahead…

While the e-commerce sector has opened up new opportunities with the benefit of flexibility and choice for women, the road to gender inclusive transport is a long one. Ensuring accessible, clean and safe toilets and safe roads, charging infrastructure for electric vehicles and safer workplaces are the major areas we need to focus on.

We need your robust support in engaging with the market players for a safe and gender-just work environment for women riders. Support us on this journey towards creating a gender-just ecosystem by engaging with communities, state and the market enabling more and more women to join work.
