Abraham's Oasis is very holistic in their intervention and we try to help women as much as we can, but unless we play a big role in the prevention aspect we will be overwhelmed with women who need our safehouse due to domestic violence, due to rape, incest etc. So we play our role and go to communities and educate communities, government offices, religious leaders, school directors. We address a myriad of subject from gender based violence, parenting skills, early marriage, abuse in different forms, human trafficking, child abandonment etc. In the past six months we have conducted trainings in 6 communities reaching 672 stakeholders!
The feedback we get from communities is encouraging, we help people to see themselves, their community and their practices. Many participants have testified that they learned new things and the realized that they were doing things completely wrong, they then give themselves the task to teach their community/Neighbours/ religious followers etc. And we know this will bring a lasting change..Communities hear about our training and we get many request for our trainings.
We are planning to start strengthen the existing community structures and teach them to function better and give them the tools to solve some problems in the community by themselves.
As Abraham's Oasis we should aim to work ourselves out of a job so that communities will advocate for the women and children, solve simple problems and know where to refer the more complex problems to.
As we know change doesn't happen over night but we will continue, one community at a time, as long as it takes. Whij? Because the women and children deserve it!
