Project Report | Nov 7, 2019
Backround of Gypsy Bashavel

By Margareta Khuri | Office manager

After one year, the Bratislava Institute of Public Administration was fulfilled with Roma energy. Singing, dancing and lot of practicing. That is Summer Academy!

Of course, each artistic component of the preparations for the Gypsy Bashavel is directed by a qualified lecturer. The theater is led by director and dramaturgist Nada Uherová, dance talents are in charge of the choreographer and teacher Lacko Cmorej, and the whole musical component is led by violinist Barbora Botošová. According to her, the Summer Academy for "wild poppies" has enormous importance: "All children are working hard. I see a huge improvement over the last year and a constant desire to move forward. It is a chance for them to show their talent!" Our teachers are respected and liked by children, as they maintain not only a professional but also a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

Long-standing friendships and power of community

In addition to the classrooms, children also have accommodation and meals in the Institute building. Each year they spend seven days together with animators, lecturers and employees of Divé maky.

In addition to acting and musical rehearsals, they also experience many joyful moments, strengthen long-term friendships and create new ones, and inspire each other. “I've been in the Wild Poppies for three years, and every Summer Academy was special to me. I always meet great people there, with whom I have a lot of experience. Of course, it's not just about fun, as rehearsals and early morning waking up are challenging. But we can always do it together in order to perform well in Bashavel and create great energy, "says theater talent Marián Bango (15).

Many talents, rich program

According to lecturer Barbora Botošová, up to 27 appearances were presented during the gala evening: “It is pity that the gala program itself lasts only two hours, these children would have a lot to play until morning. Each of them is exceptional in his work and wants to prove it on stage. "

Of course, we do not forget about the theater. They prepared a performance led by director Nada Uherová. The theater performance is played several times during the festival day. This year they have prepared original Roma story "About the Roma Mirror", which they dramatized together. However, our "wild poppies" did not contribute only to the acting talents: "Children also participated in the production as authors, stage directors, stage designers and costume designers. It is felt that their artistic soul is growing, and as creators they are able to think and select their ideas independently," says the director enthusiastically.

From classroom directly to the media!

At the time of the Summer Academy, our team and children from the Wild Pops are increasingly visiting the media to spread awareness of the upcoming festival Gypsy Bashavel as far as possible. Of course, not only the theme of the festival is important, but above all the demonstration of children's talents, the presentation of rich Roma culture and the eradication of prejudice. This year during the Summer Academy we "showed up" in Telerano on Television Markiza, where we talked about the rich program of the Gypsy Bashavel. There was also music, dance and singing.

The most famous "wild poppy" Kamila Mitrasova, who played the main role in the comedy “Loli paradicka”, went to Fun Radio together with the director and manager of Divé maky. This Slovak film about the love of Roma and non-Roma had a huge success among the audience in Slovak cinemas.

The results of hard practise

The greatest reward not only for the children themselves, but also for the whole organization of the Wild Poppies is the satisfaction of visitors to the Gypsy Bashavel. This year there was a high attendance, rich program, Roma bands all over the world on the grounds of Devín Castle, and a gala program was also successful. Barbora Botošová assessed that the children from Divé maky made great show again: "They are amazing. Their energy and joy in connection with virtuosity is really exceptional. I am looking forward to next year! "

Even the director and dramaturgist Nada Uherová, who leads the acting talents, was extremely satisfied with the performances of her "poppies": "The children brought a huge amount of acting energy into the production itself, which was undoubtedly transferred to the audience. I am very grateful that I have been able to lead them for 10 years as a lecturer, and that theatrical production gives them direction and helps also in private life ".

The Wild Poppies team, children, and especially visitors of Gypsy Bashavel, once again spent an unforgettable day together. We are already looking forward to next year!
