Make This Year 'Their Year'
By Amelia Johnson | Developement Officer

This year is the Backpack Comeback. With the challenges faced this past year, Family Giving Tree is determined to help Bay Area students make this year ‘their year’. Whether children will be back in the classroom or continue learning from home, having the correct school supplies are essential for participating and learning. With the addition of earbuds and extra notebooks, Family Giving Tree works with the teachers to ensure the supplies are exactly what students need.
Our goal is to provide 23,500 students with supply-filled backpacks through our partner schools. To achieve this, we are working to ensure the public can safely volunteer their time in our warehouse. Some precautions include smaller volunteer groups, hygiene equipment, social distancing, and the need to show proof of vaccination to work inside the building.
All of these will help keep staff and community members safe while giving back and providing backpacks.

Students may be counting the days until summer break but Family Giving Tree is busy preparing for the new school year ahead. With the school reopening plans varying from district and county, FGT is still committed to preparing students for learning, whether it happens at home or in a classroom.
In addition to providing backpacks at the beginning of the school year, FGT is continuing our educational support with our Student Restock Program and our School Success Kits. With supplies dwindling and the inability to replenish supplies from a classroom stock due to the spread of COVID, students require additional tools to complete their assignments.
This year our goal is to help 22,000 students prepare to learn with supply-filled backpacks and provide School Success Kits filled with school supplies and health items to keep them healthy during the rest of the school year.

Success in the Face of Uncertainty

This past summer looked very different for everyone including Family Giving Tree. With your generosity, over 23,000 students received the necessary tools to participate in their education virtually. In addition to those backpacks, FGT worked to provide over 4,000 emergency education kits to help restock the supplies as students transitioned from the classroom to virtual learning.
Your donations not only prepared students to learn but they provided a sense of normalcy during a time of uncertainty. Hear from one of our teachers who see the impact of your gift:
“I do home visits with many of my students each year. Some of my students share very small spaces with many other people, and their parents have to prioritize food and shelter over things like school supplies. For these kids, a new backpack or pencil case is a really special thing that can make them feel confident in school. As many of our families walk to school, a broken backpack can be devastating for one of our kids. When I know I can say, “don’t worry, we have one for you,” it makes a huge difference to that child.”
