On a cloudy day in October, teenage volunteers from Wheels to Africa volunteer walked across the Woodrow Wilson Bridge from Virginia to Maryland to raise money for the Arlington nonprofit. The three-mile, “Bridge the Gap” walk symbolizes the distance that the average student in Africa must travel to get to school each day. The bicycles that Wheels to Africa collects and the money raised to ship them overseas help these students get to school more easily. The bicycles also help adults transport goods to market and obtain medical supplies more quickly.
The group of adults and students from McLean, South County and Hayfield High Schools and Washington Latin Public Charter School walked over the bridge with the names of African students on their chest. Each person shared their African student’s name and reflected on their way of live in Africa. All participates were ask to “Commit to Change” by making a declaration of what they will do to change lives.
The participants were encouraged to turn off their cell phones and meet someone new. It was a cloudy day, but the sun began to shine as the group reached National Harbor in Maryland. Everyone walked around the harbor and enjoyed the fall afternoon.
