Loading of 40 foot container bound for Tanzania

By Dixie Duncan | Executive Director

Loading bikes
Loading bikes

Over 100 volunteers, 476 bikes, a forty foot container, and lots of heat!  Everyone was sweating because it was hot - 88 degrees and climbing.  Volunteers were packing Saturday and Sunday because we had a deadline for the container would be picked up Sunday night for shipment to Tanzania.  A forty footer is about 6 or 7 feet off the ground and it is over 8 feet tall -- Just getting into the container takes Strength and determination.

First all the bikes have to processed:  Turn the handlebars sideways and take the pedals off. Attach the pedals with zip ties and tighten up the handle bar so it will not move when it is loaded.  Processing takes lots of time -

Sorting - we sort the bikes by size because when we load we have to have the large bikes on the bottom to make two rows and our third row is small bikes.

Packing - packing the bikes is a tough job!  Bikes are lifted to a loaded who takes the bikes to the back of the container for packing.  It takes about 4 or 5 volunteers inside the 40 foot container to load.  Volunteers on the ground process, sort and deliver the bikes to the packers.

When the container is packed tightly you can place from 475 to 500 bikes in a 40 foot container.

Over 100 volunteers helped change lives in Tanzania by loading a 40 foot container with bikes.
