Summary

This project will help many families dealing with the stresses and issues of seizures and/or epilepsy. A weighted blanket is an occupational therapy aid that provides sensory input and comfort as well as aiding in sleep in most individuals. These blankets are custom made for each recipient and personalized with their name if so desired. The blankets are filled with polypropylene pellets and custom signed. These will be provided to anyone in the United States.

Challenge

Seizure disorders, also known as epilepsy, occur when abnormalities in brain neurons are present. When brain cells malfunction, a person can lose consciousness, have uncontrolled movements, or become temporarily paralyzed. After a seizure, the patient can feel physically exhausted and require relaxation and sleep to allow the body to fully recover.

Solution

Weighted blankets can provide comfort and the ability to sleep for many people with sensory disorders which often accompany seizures and epilepsy, A weighted blanket is designed to incorporate deep pressure touch to create the same sensation as a loving touch, or a hug that makes you feel relaxed and calm. When the patient uses a weighted blanket, the pressure causes the body to produce serotonin. Serotonin is effective in boosting mood, cognitive function, and easing pains.

Long-Term Impact

Sleep deprivation and stress can be big triggers for those who suffer from seizures. The goal of this project is to add some peace and rest to those who suffer with seizures, as well as their caregivers. When you have a loved one who experiences seizures, in some cases, around the clock, our goal is grant comfort and hope to these families who's lives are turned upside down by this very cruel and misunderstood condition.
