This fall, three amazing women from the World Pulse community will travel to New York, Portland, and San Francisco to speak out on global stages and at influential forums. Their stories from Tibet, Nigeria, and the U.S. will touch hearts and minds as they demonstrate the power of digital technology in changing lives and creating solutions to today’s most pressing issues.

MEET YNANNA
Born and raised in the Bronx, Ynanna is an Afro-Dominicana midwife and writer. She raises awareness about maternal and infant health for women in the United States, the country with the worst maternal death rate among industrialized nations. She is dedicated to radically changing the conditions under which women of color are giving birth in the US healthcare system.

“My personal vision for my life is to evolve and put the past to rest while carrying its lessons into a new world that is forthcoming. To speak out about the ills in the world but with a voice of hope: that shedding light will bring a healing to our families and world that has not been seen in centuries.”

MEET OLANIKE
Olanike hails from the beautiful and resource-abundant country of Nigeria. Yet, she has witnessed the environmental exploitation of her beloved homeland and mobilizes grassroots women to take charge as they have been most impacted. She believes that the only way to ensure the environmental security of Nigeria is to make sure that women have skills in environmental management and protection and an equal voice in decision-making.

"I believe that prejudice over land rights is a key factor contributing to gender disparity, with devastating results...for women, their households and communities. The degree of gender bias in land rights and its implication for food security and sovereignty in Nigeria and globally, therefore, calls for a balanced representation of women and men in decision making over land. Women’s productivity capacity must be enhanced!"

Her Work
"[As the founder of Women Initiative for Sustainable Environment (WISE)] I have directly and indirectly reached, engaged and involved thousands of women in issues of natural resource management/environmental sustainability through...activities that address water, sanitation and hygiene, alternative livelihoods, domestic energy, and sustainable agriculture among others. Today, grassroots women in my community are taking charge of, enjoying and benefiting from this new found social power."

"It has become a priority for me to keep providing opportunities for as many [women] as possible, to join the digital talk and walk... Digital skills training and internet cafe services will form an integral part of the activities of the Eco Women Resource, Life skills and Learning Center which I plan to establish in my community."

MEET JAMPA
Born in a small village in the Tibetan plateau, Jampa is a poet and rising community leader. The only person from her village to attend a university, she has improved the lives of hundreds through small solar and literacy development projects. Jampa is committed to giving voice to the invisible women of Tibet and empowering young girls to pursue their dreams.

"I see myself as a trailblazer of positive changes in my community. I want to be an effective change maker and exemplary social worker...I want to establish an organization that provides a vibrant and diverse residential learning community where girls are encouraged to take part and fulfill their potentials."

Her Work
"I empower girls and prove that education makes a difference by doing small-scale development projects. So far, I have implemented a Solar Panel Project (30 solar panels to 30 households); a Flash Lighter Project which benefited 54 families; a Second-hand Clothes Project which benefited 160 people and a Book Project that benefited 342 students and 18 teachers...The purpose of these projects is to have parents send more girls to school because they could see girls also can do so much."

We congratulate Malaya Pinas of the Phillipines winning the Women Have Wings Award as well as a Global Voices micro grant; Beatrice Achieng winning the OpenIDEO challenge to make urban areas safer for women and girls; Stella Paul winning the Asian Environmental Journalism Award; and Neema Namadamu for winning Africa's most Influential Women in Civil Society Award.
