Most of you already know about our Missy. She's had a long history of eating things she is not supposed to eat. In March of this year, Missy became impacted again due to eating excessive amounts of dirt. Lorraine began treatment at home until Missy could be taken to Medical Center For Birds. Upon fluroscopy exam, Dr. Speer found that she had swallowed a hog ring. Dr. Speer suspected zinc poisoning and Missy was hospitalized overnight for treatment. Thankfully, the dirt impaction was not as severe as in the past.
About 3 weeks later, Missy returned to the vet because she wasn't fully recovered. Fluroscopy was repeated and we learned that she passed the hog ring in her gizzard but she had swallowed another hog ring AND a washer which was located in her "crop" area. Dr. Fitzgerald increased her medications and recommended additional fluids. Missy returne to normal after treatment and was fine for about 4 weeks. Yes, she managed to get impacted yet again.
Lorraine treated Missy with her prescribed medications and fluids and as of right now, she is almost fully recovered. We also made adjustments to her night-time pen so she is unable to access any dirt. Future plans include pouring concrete so she can never get to the dirt at night.
Unfortunately, Missy's "pica" is a behaviorial issue that we can't control. We can only do our best to manage her condition. In the 7 times she has done this, 6 of them have been during breeding season so we are hoping that she stops eating metal and dirt soon.
She is still our Hissy Pissy Missy and we LOVE her!
We are so thankful for your donations that go to support MIssy and all of our birds in need.We appreciate YOU!
