This project was to raise money to drill a reliable source of water for the La Gonave Community Leadership & Development Center. We raised a total of $36,000 between on and offline donations, including $23,000 on Global Giving! Thank you to everyone who supported this project!
While traditional aid has failed in Haiti and elsewhere, the residents of La Gonave have been leading sustainable, community-led development initiatives for years. With a Community Leadership & Development Center, they can concentrate their efforts, expand their work, and share best practices with others. However, before construction can begin, we must ensure the center has an independent and reliable supply of clean water for the staff, residents, and volunteers that will work and stay there.
The center will give La Gonave's population (approximately 85,000) a meeting and training facility where local authorities can strengthen their management and leadership skills and communities can come together to plan and organize sustainable projects that improve quality of life on the island. To access water and make the center fully operational, we need to drill deep underground, collect rainwater, install pumps, and build storage tanks.
The La Gonave Community Leadership & Development Center will help strengthen the leaders of La Gonave and put the island on the map. The center will provide generations of Haitian leaders with the space and resources they need to lead, to demonstrate to the world how development can work, and offer a model that can be emulated across the globe.
