This project will provide 3,000 rural households with 20-litre water filter buckets fitted with durable filtration systems to ensure safe and clean drinking water. Reaching approximately 15,000 people across 10 counties, the project will reduce waterborne diseases such as cholera, typhoid and diarrhoea. Families will receive training on proper use and maintenance, enabling the filters to remain effective for up to five years or more and deliver lasting health benefits.
In Kenya, 9.9 million people still drink unsafe water from rivers, ponds, and shallow wells (UNICEF). In rural communities, over 40% of households depend on these contaminated sources, exposing families to waterborne diseases such as cholera, typhoid, dysentery, and diarrhoea. Boiling water is often impossible due to high cost of cooking gas. Children under five suffer most, accounting for 82.9% of cases, with unsafe water and poor sanitation causing thousands of preventable deaths each year.
This project will provide 3,000 rural households with 20-litre water filter buckets fitted with a filtration adapter kit that removes contaminants and makes water clean and safe to drink. The filtration system removes 99.9% of bacteria, protozoa, cysts, soil, and sediment, therefore improving household health. Families will be trained on installation, proper use, cleaning, and maintenance of the filtration adapter kit to ensure safe and consistent water treatment at home all year round.
This project will solve the long-term challenge of unsafe drinking water for 3,000 rural households in 10 counties, benefitting approximately 15,000 people. With proper care, regular cleaning and maintenance, the water filters can remain effective for up to 3 to 5 years or more, providing sustained and ongoing access to clean and safe drinking water. Over time, this will significantly reduce waterborne diseases, lower medical expenses, and improve child health and overall family health.
