Full Water & Sanitation Coverage in Rural Honduras

Water For People continues to work toward achieving Everyone Forever in our districts in Honduras with safe and reliable water and sanitation services through partnerships with local government, communities and businesses. Reflecting on the progress made in 2016, we are excited to share a couple of highlights.

The Water For People-Honduras team has been working with micro-finance institutions, masons, and hardware stores to development of a strong sanitation market that supports toilet construction, purchase and installation activities. With the support of Water For People-Honduras, the Municipal Associations of Water and Sanitation Committees grants loans to community-level water committees who are then able to provide micro-loans to community members for the purchase and construction of sanitation facilities.  As a result of these comprehensive efforts, 269 families acquired toilets in 2016, and 1,162 people in the districts of Chinda, El Negrito and San Antonio now benefit from improved sanitation as a result

Strong local, institutional capacity is a critical component of Forever and, as such, Water For People-Honduras has been steadily building the capacity of municipalities and communities to independently sustain water systems and sanitation services in the long-term. In each of the three Everyone Forever districts, Water For People-Honduras provides training and support to community water and sanitation committees on operation, maintenance and administration of water and sanitation services, enabling them to be self-sufficient. As part of this strategy, the Water For People-Honduras team supported the recent decision by the municipal government of El Negrito to hire three technical staff. The growth of our local government partners is a great step toward the day when the communities of Chinda, El Negrito and San Antonio will never again rely on foreign aid for their water and sanitation needs!
