Water For People-Honduras has great momentum on Local Water Resources Management, particularly in protecting land around key water sources. In the Municipality of El Negrito, the Municipal Commission to Purchase Micro-watersheds has bought the land surrounding the water source in the community of El Tibre. They also celebrated gaining legal protected status for the land surrounding the water sources of the communities of La Pita/Las Palmas and Las Crucitas N-1. In Chinda, the process to protect the micro-watershed of the community of El Retiro is moving forward.
To make sure that the institutional arrangements are in place to make Forever possible, Water For People-Honduras and partners strengthened civil society organizations such as the COMAS (Municipal Water and Sanitation Commission), AJAASM (Municipal Association of Water and Sanitation Committees) and USCL (Local Supervisory and Control Unit). The AJAASM are now organized into geographic sectors, which has yielded positive results such as the reorganization of the chlorine banks to make them more accessible and functional. The AJAASM in all three districts are now offering loans for sanitation and the AJAASMs of Chinda and San Antonio have completed their regulations for credit and adopted administrative tools to ensure financial transparency.
