Water For People-Honduras has worked towards increasing sanitation coverage in El Negrito, San Antonio, and Chinda through the sustainable sanitation strategy of strengthening the Municipal Associations of Water and Sanitation Committees (AJAASM) to offer loans for sanitation construction. In total, 37 loans have been given out for sanitation through this strategy in the three districts where we work. In El Negrito, the 16 families who were given loans in the community of Las Crucitas No.1, have completed the construction of their toilets and begun repaying their loans though their monthly water tariff. The AJAASM of Chinda has given out its first four loans in the community of El Tulito. In San Antonio the AJAASM started a pilot project in September where 17 loans have been given out and community members have already started to repay the loans through their monthly water tariff. Water For People-Honduras strengthened the AJAASMs of all three districts legally and administratively, specifically through supporting the creation of entities within the AJAASMs that have the legal ability to award and administer loans.
