Twelve more villages to receive support

By Michele Comber | Project Manager

We appreciate you ongoing support for the waste management program.

We have continued to work together with the communities of Dawasamu and Bureiwai District towards long-term sustainable goals and achievements in waste management. Through baseline research, educational workshops, community empowerment, construction of recycling points, regular monitoring and data collection.

Another recycling collection has taken place and now the total amount of waste recycled since the beginning is 20 tonnes of tin, glass and plastic.

Over the last five months, we have been carrying out house-to-house surveys with the communities of Dawasamu the information has been very positive. After reviewing the surveys it has highlighted areas of concern. Re-fresher workshops are now underway targeting those specific concerns related to each specific village.

We are very excited to announce that we have started to implement plans to introduce a waste management programme to our neighbouring district of Nemana. There are 12 villages within this district and our plan is to implement a waste management program in each village over a period of 12 months - one village per month.

We have just completed building 4 recycling points in the village of Qerekuro which will service 65 houses and approx 349 community members. The community of Qerekuro are very proud to be the first village in their district to have a waste management program.

It is vital that communities take ownership by working closely with key members of the communities and encouraging them to use the information collected to celebrate successes, make improvements and change behaviour to create a culture where the waste management is understood.

Your support for this project means that we are able to support villages such as Nemana to have waste management systems in there village.

We thank you for your onging support and will keep you updated on our progress as we strive to introduce waste management to the district of Nemana.

Your support is appreciated.
