Health care facilities (HCF) in rural Honduras struggle with access to improved water, sustainable water systems, safe sanitation and proper hygiene training. This project will provide much needed access to safe water, improved water management and bathroom facilities. Comprehensive hygiene training and monitoring and evaluation will be provided to facilitate a safe, hygienic environment for patients, staff and the broader community.
Water: Health clinics struggle with water storage, endangering the entire water supply. The water is not safe for consumption. A complete lack of water, during low water periods, severely impedes operations. Bathrooms. The toilets are in disrepair, creating an unhygienic, unsafe environment. There is no soap and no place to wash hands, increasing the risk of spreading infections/diseases. Waste Management: There is no disposal area for waste/garbage, creating health & environmental hazards.
Implement WASHFIT, a training model that improves water, sanitation & hygiene practices/services in health centers. Renovate Bathroom: replace unsafe toilets; construct a family/accessible bathroom. Install hand-washing stations, with soap. Construct designated stations to sanitize medical instruments. Water: Repair or install water storage tanks and rectify water supply inconsistency. Install water filters and safe storage containers. Waste. Develop proper waste disposal system.
Reliable access to safe water and sanitation, combined with good hygiene practices, significantly reduces the spread of diseases and protects human and environmental health. As a result of this project, the health center will offer patients and staff a safe and hygienic environment. Staff will be better equipped to deliver medical services, which can increase the consistency of preventative health visits, especially among young children and pregnant women, improving overall health outcomes
