By Maria Inestroza | Project Leader
This project improved water, sanitation, and hygiene services at the Health Center, creating a safer and more dignified environment for patients, staff, and the community.
What we completed:
A fully built sanitation module with 3 private cubicles, 3 toilets, and 3 handwashing sinks; safe access walkways; 3 water storage tanks with the capacity to store 4,700 liters plus a 1,100 L rainwater backup tank; a septic system; electric lighting; and full interior finishes.
Hygiene support included essential hygiene items, cleaning supplies, soap for handwashing and hygiene training for health staff, health guardians, students at the school and community members.
Training & Sustainability (WASH FIT):
Health center staff, health guardians, and community members were trained using the WASH FIT (Water and Sanitation for Health Facility Improvement Tool) approach. This training strengthens daily operation, cleaning routines, risk identification, and preventive maintenance—ensuring the facilities are properly used, monitored, and cared for over time. By building local capacity, the project remains effective long after construction ends.
Impact:
The Health Center now safely serves more then 2000 people each year.
Next steps:
Continued monitoring and water quality analysis to ensure safe, reliable services.
Thank you to GlobalGiving supporters and APPM supporters for helping make this impact sustainable one clean health visit at a time!
