Water, Air and Food Awards thanks our donors for their generous support in 2018!!! We are pleased to report our wonderful success for 2018 Award Ceremonies. For the first time, WAFA Awards were celebrated at our winner’s locations. These events helped us expose our winners to 33 million in India; and many more in Nicaragua and Nigeria. The funds raised at GlobalGiving were used to organize the local events and give the prize money to our winners of 2018.
Here are snippets about the winners and the ceremonies:
Award Ceremony for the winner of Water Category
November 14 , 2018
Mazhapolima
Rainwater Runoff
Kerala State, India
The WAFA Award represents international credentials and exposure.
Mazhapolima has taken up the challenge of conserving winter monsoon rainwater in the local wells. Mazhapolima harvests rainwater runoff from rooftops during the rainy season. Households install a pipeline in the roof directly connected to a well / borehole where they store the water. Over 30,000 rainwater collection and well recharging systems projects have been built.
For the 200,000 people benefiting from the Mazhapolima rain water harvesting, WAFA was pleased to present the 2018 WAFA Award with cash assistance and the Award Amphora. The on-site award event was ideal to celebrate and acknowledge the amazing work being done with community based efforts.
Mazhapolima has transformed water access and quality through the improvement of 600,000 wells. With the support and efforts of home workers, businesses, schools, and families, simple plumbing technology is put in place to improve groundwater.
As an impact of WAFA Award, our water winner is invited to present his project in first Waterlex Summit being organized on February 7-8, 2019 in Geneva.
Award Ceremony for Air Category
December , 2018
Fuprosomonic
Solar Ovens
Nicaragua
The WAFA Award exposes projects to scale and replicate proven new innovations in similar communities globally. Our winner of the Air category, Fuprosomonic in Nicaragua, is a solar oven project. Marketing and distribution of the ovens has mobilized communities which has helped protect women’s rights, clean local air, improve the quality of food, and have new techniques to preserving food.
Fuprosomonic has mobilized communities to develop healthier lifestyles: constructing solar ovens and food dryers, as well as learning about nutrition, bio-intensive home gardening, water purification, and other important topics. This training has empowered Nicaraguan communities to improve their wellbeing and cast healthy example for neighbors and beyond.
At the Award event, women proudly shared, "The use of solar cookers has had a great impact in us women, because we are the ones who handle the food in the home”. They echoed the impact of their project as it was using the solar energy to produce healthy food without cutting trees and being exposed to smoke that has an adverse effect on their health.
Award Ceremony for Food Category
January 14, 2019
People and Planet Life Foundation
Fish Food Project
Lagos, Nigeria
Recently, we celebrated the WAFA Award for our Food Category that made our winners feel the success in their community. WAFA Award helps our winner use the platform to share their success with other communities and make progress toward their goal.
In Nigeria, the women of the People and Planet Life Foundation have developed a tool for cultivating and farming fish thereby ensuring a reliable and healthy source of food while giving women and families a means of a sustainable livelihood. These women are trained with all the necessary skills that are needed to be a successful entrepreneur: accounting, basic maths, and other business skills to make the project successful and sustainable.
At the celebration event, a women entrepreneur and trainer at the fish farm, described some of the impact of the PPLF Project. “This means so much to us in Nigeria. To be recognized for our work, for the opportunities to the women and families and to the betterment of our lives. This helps us to put into practice our products and help us to make money and to teach our children how they can better their lives.”
Stay tuned for more successful stories to be shared in 2019. Thank you for your ongoing support.
