The Empowering Influence of Music

The Empowering Influence of Music: A Fulfilling Musical Festival Experience for VFA's Children

In a challenging setting, music wields a transformative power, greatly impacting the lives of young learners at VFA Primary School. Music offers hope, a sense of community, and essential life skills, preparing young minds for a brighter future.

Recently, the students of VFA enthusiastically participated in the 2023 Kenya Music Festival, competing at the Langata sub-county level across various categories. Their outstanding achievements include securing 1st place in the set piece "Maua Mazuri," 2nd place with the folk song "Buganda," and an impressive 3rd place with a solo performance by a grade 5 student. Subsequently, they advanced to the Nairobi County level competition, achieving commendable 6th, 9th, and 13th positions—an exceptional feat for a school of VFA's size!

This remarkable success is credited to the dedication and talent of C, an accomplished student now studying at Kenyatta University in Nairobi, and two devoted teachers. Their commitment has allowed us to witness firsthand the profound impact of music on the lives of our children and its pivotal role in their all-encompassing development.

For weeks leading up to the festival, students diligently learned and practiced singing and dancing, collaborating within groups and ensembles. This process developed crucial skills, such as effective collaboration, communication, and an appreciation for each member's strengths. These skills are not only vital in the realm of music but also pivotal in their future endeavors. Those not chosen for the choir provided valuable support by encouraging their peers, assisting with dance moves, and tending to costumes. Their involvement showcased a spirit of unity and cooperation.

Research indicates that engaging with music enhances cognitive abilities in children, bolstering memory, concentration, and problem-solving skills. Music is deeply rooted in African culture, acting as a conduit for passing down traditions, narratives, and values from one generation to the next. Introducing traditional music and dance to the children of Kibera serves to preserve their cultural heritage while instilling a sense of pride and identity. Understanding their roots through music empowers these young minds to embrace their unique backgrounds and celebrate their diversity.

Anticipation is building for the next year's festival, where we are confident that VFA will achieve even greater success!
