More Than a Roof: A Student Sanctuary!

By Monica Dan & Paola Longobardi | Founder & Trustee

A New View from the Top: Our Terrace and Playground Transformation!

Hi everyone! We are so excited to share some wonderful news from the school. Thanks to your amazing support through GlobalGiving, we’ve just completed a major upgrade to our campus that is already changing the way our students spend their day.

More Space to Grow, Rain or Shine

We’ve officially added protective roofing to our upper school terrace and a large section of the playground. It might sound like a simple construction project, but for our kids, it’s a total game-changer. These areas were often unusable during the hottest parts of the day or when it rains. Now, they are vibrant, year-round hubs for:

  • Outdoor Classrooms: Creating sheltered areas suitable for study, group activities, and even outdoor lessons.
  • Study Zones: Shaded spots that the students can use to study comfortably.
  • Safe Play: Giving everyone room to run and socialise, protected from the elements regardless of weather conditions.

Why This Matters (The "Science" of a Happy School)

We know that a school is more than just four walls and a desk. Research shows that when kids feel comfortable and safe in their physical environment, they engage more deeply and perform better academically.

"Research shows that the physical environment plays a role in student achievement and behaviour and can foster a positive outlook that supports learning, achievement, and social behaviour." — Fisher & Frey (2022), as cited in peer-reviewed educational literature

But even more importantly, many of our students face tough challenges outside of school. For them, having a calm, ordered, and beautiful space isn't a luxury, it's a sanctuary.

"Safe, engaging, and supportive learning environments, as well as healthy and supportive relationships with caring adults, can serve as potential protective factors that buffer against the negative impacts of trauma and stress." — Institute of Education Sciences, U.S. Department of Education

These new covered areas offer:

  • A Stress-Free Zone: Fresh air and a change of scenery are proven to lower anxiety and boost happiness.
  • A Sense of Security: A safe, supportive environment acts as a protective factor that buffers against trauma and stress.
  • Better Focus: When kids are in comfortable, nature-adjacent environments, they demonstrate greater focus and motivation.

"The fresh air and change of scenery help reduce stress and anxiety levels, making outdoor learning an effective tool for improving overall well-being." — Tallbox Design, citing educational research

"Regular time spent outdoors contributes to better mental health and happiness, regardless of age, and research at the K-12 level indicates that outdoor experiences lead to higher student engagement and test scores, and notably, fewer violent incidents." — Clark Nexsen, architectural research

 A Heartfelt Thank You

Every square meter of this new space was made possible by you. You aren't just building a roof, you’re building a place that affirms our students' worth and nurtures their potential.

Thank you for being part of the Volunteers Foundation family and for helping us build a better future for our children!
