VF Schooling Program (VFSP) funds the education of the students at VF Academy and partnering schools. It is set up to be a combined effort between the children's parents and Volunteers Foundation. The parents are expected to buy the school uniform, contribute to the meals and make sure that their child attends school regularly, and Volunteers Foundation covers the yearly school fee for the child. Kibera is one of the largest slums in Africa. Free public education has been introduced in Kenya in 2018, for students up to the age of 18. A high increase in enrolment resulted in overcrowded classes which has an impact on the quality of the education provided. VF has been founded to fill the gap and provide quality education in particular to the most disadvantaged children living in Kibera. Toady more than 320 students and their families benefit from VF activities and programs.
Based on three key pillars, Education, Health and Nutrition, and many programs for each of the pillars, the VF Academy supported by the VFSP, provides quality education in a caring, safe and contained environment. The small classes, the trained and experienced teachers, the advanced educational tools and extracurricular opportunities the students benefit from, make VF Academy an important contributor to the development of the students and the wider community.
Before COVID-19, primary school enrolment was 99% but at secondary level only 71%. In line with the Sustainable Global Goals and the unalienable right to education for all, VFSP addresses a community with very low income that otherwise would not be able to afford quality education. The program is key to long-term economic recovery, social stability of the community and growth. Without education, the development of a sustainable future for all will be impossible.
