Vital domestic violence service under threat

As we have previously shared with you, after achieving our funding goal and before the end of this fiscal year, we will be closing our campaign.

We want to inform you that your monthly donation won't be canceled but instead, it will be moved to a GlobalGiving general pot to support other projects worldwide. Any changes in your donation will have to be done manually by yourself. now that the year is coming to an end, at LAWA we would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support throughout this time. As we have shared with you before, the past years have been full of funding cuts and challenges but we are happy to say that we are surviving and we have been able to maintain and expand our vital services for Latin American and other minoritized women and children experiencing and fleeing domestic violence. This is also due to the support of friends like you.

GlobalGiving has been a great platform and ally for LAWA. It has enable us to not only spread our message, increase the awareness, but also raise funds to do our job. Now, having achieved our goals, we are closing our crowdfunding campaign. Last, but not least, the funds raised during this last campaign phase were used to support the settlement of the families in our new refuge. We were able to provide support to 9 families (9 women and 12 children) in the new house. We sincerely hope we can keep in touch and to continue fighting together to end violence against women and girls.

We are happy to share with you that we have reached our funding goal (Yei!), and soon our campaign will be going to an end. It has been an incredible experience to have had your support during this time, and to achieve together our aim. Now, we would like to share with you the goals we have accomplished thanks to your help.

We were able to maintain our refuge service provision and counselling for the Latin American Women and Children who were fleeing gender violence, especially domestic abuse:

- We have provided emergency shelter and support to 17 women and their children: this includes the emotional and practical support women and children need when fleeing violence. 

- 75 women have received emotional counselling service, provided in their own language (Spanish or Portuguese). This enables a more confident space for women, as they can express themselves in their mother tongue.

- We have supported 91 women through our advice centre, offering legal, family and benefits surgeries support.

Once again, we want to let you know that your donations were essential for this to happen. As you know, our refuge is more than a roof, it’s a place of healing, hope, and new beginnings, where women and their children have the chance to rebuild their lives and start fresh after a traumatic experience.

As we continue to struggle with public funding cuts, every penny makes a difference and help us in our journey to provide holistic support for victims of domestic violence.

To finalize, we also want to share with you that we have just open our second refuge. This represents an incredible achievement for us and the women of our community, especially within the hostile environment BME women organisations face right now.

Thanks to your incredible support we have been able to reach our target and increase our funding to maintain the refuge service provision and counselling for the Latin American women and children fleeing domestic violence. 

Since this campaing has started last November we have reached several objectives. These are some of our main outcomes:

- We have provided emergency shelter and support to 14 women and their children: this includes the emotional and practical support women and children need when fleeing violence. 

- 68 women have received emotional counselling service, provided in their own language (Spanish or Portuguese). This enables a more confident space for women, as they can express themselves in their mother tongue. 

- We have supported 76 women through our advice centre, offering legal, family and benefits surgeries support. 

As we have shared with you, in the last 30 years we have been proudly running the only shelter for Latin American women. We have developed a tailored and holitic approach that has proved to be successful, as the following indicators reflect:

95% women said that our support helped them improve their self-esteem

90% said they now know more about their rights

85% said that our service made them feel confident to make decisions for themselves

90% said that our services made them feel more positive about the future

79% said that our support made them feel that they and their children would be safe

96% said that they felt heard and believed by the staff

We wanted to let you know that your donations were essential for this to happen. As you know, our shelter is not only a temporary place to stay but also a space where women and their children have the chance to rebuild their lives and start fresh after a traumatic experience.

You have helped LAWA get so far and we are now nearly reaching our Crowdfunding Campaign target.

As you know, the past weeks were very busy and important for our organization as we celebrated International Women's Day, took the opportunity to celebrate our achievements but also strengthen our commitment and struggle for women’s rights.

In the past week we have been sharing some very special reasons why our work is so crucial and essential for our society:

• 90% of our users expressed that their wellbeing has improved
  substantially because of our support.

• BME and migrant women often become trapped in violence due to lack
  of access to information and knowledge about their rights. 90% of
  LAWA’s users said they now know more about their rights after our help.
