Project – Community Based Rehabilitation – Vidya Sagar

Our mission of sharing information and reaching out where services are not available for persons with disabilities is fulfilled through the Community Based Rehabilitation program. The first initiative was as an outreach program of Vidya Sagar in Arcot district in Tamil Nadu and today it is an independent organization with its own trained staff.
NGOs working in other developmental areas approach us for technical support in the management of disability. The Community Based Rehabilitation programs began as a result of these needs.
This program focuses on capacity building in partner organizations in rural, semi urban areas and slum communities. Grassroots workers are trained to work with the persons with disabilities. Depending on the needs of the organization, specific partnership details are planned, worked out and evaluated together by both organizations in terms of objectives, time, and modality.The objective, typically, is for the organization to become self-sufficient over a period of time, in working with people with disabilities. It is also the aim of the program to build a perspective to disability in the community.
The program:
- Provides initial and ongoing training to CBR workers
- Sets up of resource centers /programs as required
- Organizes periodic visits to the specific organization by a Vidya Sagar team
- Provides linkages to other organizations
This program has resulted in the empowerment of CBR workers. We have been able to reach the unreached in remote pockets in districts of Tamil Nadu and others states.

Mission: Enhancing the technical skills ( with respect to education , therapy , livelihood and vocational training at the Mahaeswar Resources Centre. Also to provide training in administration and fund raising for sustenance.
Vasantham Disabled Peoples Organisation:
No of community workers: 3
No of sessions required across the year: 44
Mission: Facilitate rehabilitation services for 50 people with developmental disabilities. This DPO facilitates government schemes for the members for the members in health, education and livelihood. The DPO does not know working with people with developmental disabilities and hence, is not able to address the needs of PWD and family effectively. The activities will comprise of assessing the children, set goals and the methods to realise it, train the community worker on rehabilitation workers and teach them the method of mobilizing fund. The program also aims at providing administrative and fund raising skills to make the partner ngo self sustaining.
MCDS
No of community workers: 6
No of sessions required across the year: 16
Mission: Assesment and program planning for children with disabilities and facilitate access to services at MCDS. The focus is to provide appropriate services for children with disability in the centre, assesement and program planning and empower the staff. The program also aims at providing administrative and fund raising skills to make the partner ngo self sustaining.
NJ Foundation:

No of sessions required across the year: 22
Mission: To provide technical training and guidance for rehabilitation services and vocational training at NJ Foundation. The focus would be to provide proper assessment and program planning for children, training the staff, organising resources through management (infrastructure, furniture etc), guide staff and parents to access the other services needed and setting up prevocational unit.
LC , Nagapatinum
No of community workers: 4
No of sessions required across the year: 6
Mission: To facilitate appropriate services and livelihood opportunities at the residential centre at LC Project, Nagapatinum. The focus is to assess all the children and plan program, train the staff in the areas of functional academics, prevocational skills etc, marketing studies and resources mapping, identify job opportunities for open placement and guide staff in preparing persons with disabilities for open placement. Also to provide training in administration and fund raising for sustenance.
11 Slums , Chennai

Mission: Resource mapping and guidance in the slums to facilitate access to services for persons with disabilities
The amount raised through the support of all the donors through GlobalGiving will be used for salaries of trained professionals (experienced special educators, physiotherapists, trained administration and accounts personnel) so that they can reach out to various communities and provide the necessary training in rehabilitation and administrative services basis the needs of each community, across the year.
