Vidya Sagar's CBR program ( since 1990 ) aims at sharing the technical knowledge and skills on rehabilitation( capacity building ) and reach out to as many persons with disability, irrespective of their location and socio - economic background ,ensuring access to appropriate services. The CBR team with 5 projects reaches out to 28 community workers, more than 150 persons with disabilities, their families and the community.
We work with persons with multiple disabilities, their families and the community where facilities are inaccessible. This population is one of the most marginalized in the community. WHO report states that poverty and disability are interrelated. In India, where resources are few and numbers large, education, employment and legal capacity is inaccessible for this population. There is a scarcity of trained rehabilitation professionals. The attitudinal barriers slow down their progress.
We partner with organization with similar perspectives to help communities obtain, strengthen and sustain their projects. We train the community workers in rehabilitation skills (therapy, special education, communication and speech), prevocational skills training, guide community workers and family to avail suitable services in the community, guidance for adults to take up livelihood opportunities, work with schools, conduct awareness program in community and periodic reviews to monitor progress
The project will lead to the involvement of the community and create awareness on issues pertaining to disability, changing the perspective. Access to rehabilitation services, education, livelihood opportunities, through trained personnel will empower persons with disability to take decisions independently and become active members of the community. They will have a bigger say in matters pertaining to their lives, overcoming the marginalization and exclusion and becoming a part of mainstream .
