Times are Difficult For Veterans

By Lois Healy | CEO/Project Leader

Times are difficult for many veterans, and this issue deserves both recognition and action, This year has been a challenging year for everyone but Veterans are struggling. Most of the grant programs to help individuals and families with rent and utilities have gone away and next year appears will be even more difficult. Veterans are struggling with just trying to afford a safe place to live.. Here are some of the key challenges veterans often face today:

Challenges Veterans Face 1. Mental Health Issues

  • PTSD, depression, and anxiety are prevalent.

  • Many veterans face long wait times for treatment.

  • There’s still a stigma around seeking help.

2. Homelessness

  • A disproportionate number of homeless individuals are veterans.

  • Contributing factors: lack of support systems, unemployment, mental illness, and addiction.

3. Unemployment or Underemployment

  • Translating military experience into civilian job skills can be difficult.

  • Some employers don’t understand or value military backgrounds.

4. Healthcare Gaps

  • The VA system is overburdened in many areas.

  • Rural veterans especially may lack access to timely care.

5. Suicide Rates

  • Veterans have significantly higher suicide rates than civilians.

    • Lack of support, isolation, and untreated mental health issues are contributing factors.

What Can Be Done? For Individuals:
    • Support veterans whenever you can

    • Hire veterans and value their unique skill sets.

    • Check in on veteran friends/family — simple gestures go a long way.

    For Policymakers:
    • Increase funding for mental health and homelessness services.

    • Improve VA healthcare access and reform wait times.

    • Promote transition programs for service members reentering civilian life

  • How Do we Change this?  Veterans have given their all now it's time to give back if you can afford to, their survial depends on it. This last quarter donations were very low so our ability to help the Veterans we serve was also very low. You can make the difference in a Veterans Life!

We appreciate all of your donations the past few years to help our Veterans and we hope that you will continue to give so we can continue to do this very important work. Thank you for all of your donations!
